People, goods, ideas, religions, artistic traditions and cultures traveled across those waters for thousands of years. Italy's position in the Mediterranean placed it at the crossroads of civilizations from Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

That means the relationship between Italy and Africa isn't a new story. It's an ancient one.

Finding Africa in Italian History

Travel through Italy and reminders of its relationship with Africa appear in places you might not expect. Ancient Rome's world extended deep into North Africa, encompassing territories across what are now Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Egypt and Morocco. North African cities became important centers of commerce, scholarship and Roman life.

People moved throughout this enormous, interconnected world. Later centuries brought additional encounters between Italy and Africa through Sicily and Southern Italy, Mediterranean trade, migration, religion and cultural exchange. The result is a history far more interconnected than the neat boundaries on today's maps might suggest.

Africa was not simply somewhere outside the European story.

Africa was part of the Mediterranean story.

And Italy was one of its great crossroads.

Look Again at the Art

Some of the most fascinating discoveries can happen inside Italy's churches, galleries and museums. Walk through centuries of European religious art and you may encounter Black figures represented as saints, biblical characters, rulers, attendants and visitors.

One particularly compelling figure is Saint Maurice, an early Christian martyr traditionally associated with the Roman Theban Legion from Egypt. In European art, particularly beginning in the medieval period, he was sometimes depicted as a Black African saint.

Then there are images connected to Balthazar, one of the Three Magi, who increasingly appeared as an African king in European Renaissance art. For travelers accustomed to seeing Renaissance Italy presented through an exclusively European lens, these images invite another question: What else have we walked past without knowing the story? That moment of discovery is exactly why heritage travel can be so powerful.

Sicily: Where Worlds Met

If there is one place that beautifully illustrates Italy's position at the crossroads of cultures, it is Sicily. Located just across the Mediterranean from North Africa, the island has been influenced by numerous civilizations throughout its history. Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman and other cultures left their mark on Sicily's architecture, language, agriculture and cuisine.

Walk through a Sicilian market and those centuries of cultural exchange don't feel quite so distant. The spices. Citrus. Seafood. Street foods. Architecture. They tell a story of movement and exchange across the Mediterranean. It's a reminder that cultures rarely develop in isolation.

They influence one another.

And sometimes, centuries later, those connections are still sitting right in front of us.
